Close up of chipped front toothYour teeth are protected by the hardest substance in your body. Your enamel is stronger than bone and even some metals, but it isn’t indestructible. Biting down on a popcorn kernel or a blow to the mouth during a game of football can result in a chipped tooth. No matter the cause, you need an emergency dentist right away, even if you’re not having any pain. Don’t panic. Here’s what you should do if you’ve chipped a tooth.

A Chipped Tooth is a Dental Emergency

Not all chipped teeth cause pain, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to see an emergency dentist. Even if the damage appears superficial, don’t delay treatment. Although enamel is incredibly strong, it can regenerate. Therefore, your tooth will not grow back. It will be vulnerable to sensitivity, breaks, fractures, decay, and infections if it isn’t treated. It’s best to contact your emergency dentist.

Caring for a Chipped Tooth at Home

While you wait for your appointment, take an OTC pain reliever if you’re having any discomfort. Rinse your mouth with salt water to kill harmful bacteria. It will also reduce any pain or inflammation. Eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth until after your tooth has been repaired. It’s best to skip hot or cold foods and drinks to avoid sensitivity. Continue to brush and floss your teeth to keep your mouth clean.

Fixing a Chipped Tooth

Your emergency dentist will get you into their office quickly. They’ll address any pain and examine your mouth. Your dentist will also review X-rays to see the full extent of the damage. Based on the results of their examination, they’ll recommend a procedure to fix your tooth, like:

  • Dental Bonding: Dental bonding offers a quick fix that’s affordable and looks natural. A composite resin matching the color of your enamel can be used to rebuild the lost portion of your tooth.
  • Dental Crown: Large breaks or fractures may require a dental crown. The protective cap will cover your tooth to avoid future issues.
  • Veneer: A veneer covers the front side of a tooth to improve its appearance. It’s a versatile solution to address many issues, including chips and cracks.

Your dentist will create a personalized plan to restore the health, function, and appearance of your tooth. You’ll enjoy natural-looking results that can last.
